Australia's Visitor and Tourist Visas changed on 23 March, 2013. 

Tourist Visas

For people to visit Australia for a holiday, sightseeing, social or recreational reasons, to visit relatives, friends or for other short-term non-work purposes.

People who intend to visit for medical treatment or to transit through Australia, should not apply for a visitor visa online. A Medical Treatment Visa or a Transit Visa maybe more appropriate.

Visa Options

For people visiting Australia for holidays, tourism, recreation or to see family and friends. If you are an Australian Citizen or have obtained Australian Citizenship by descent, you are not able to apply for, or be granted an Australian visa.

 

TEMPORARY WORK (SHORT STAY ACTIVITY) VISA (SUBCLASS 400)

This visa is for people who were previously eligible for a Business (short Stay) visa (Subclass 456) or a Sponsored business visitor (short stay) visa (subclass 459) and who wished to enter Australia for work  purposes.

The Temporary work (short stay activity) visa (subclass 400) lets you come to Australia on a temporary basis to do short-term work or conduct an activity as an invited participant in an event.

 

VISITOR VISA (SUBCLASS 600)

This visa is for people who were previously eligible for a Tourist visa (subclass 676) or Sponsored family visitor visa (subclass 679).

It is also available for those people previously eligible for a Business (short Stay) visa (Subclass 456) or a Sponsored business visitor (short stay) visa (subclass 459) and who wished to enter Australia for business  purposes.

The Visitor visa (subclass 600) lets you visit Australia for tourism or business visitor activities. Tourism includes holidays, recreation and seeing family or friends. Business visitor activities may include attending a conference, negotiation or an exploratory business visit. You cannot work for, or provide services to, a business or organisation in Australia or sell goods or services to the public.

For those applicants who are formally sponsored by an Australian citizen or permanent resident relative living in Australia a Security Bond, of up to AUD$15,000 may be required before the visa is granted. If the visa holder fails to depart Australia prior to the expiry of the Subclass 679 Visa, this Security Bond will be forfeited, even if the visa holder is permitted to remain in Australia after the expiry of their visa

If you are intending to do short-term work in Australia you should apply for the new Temporary work (short stay activity) visa (subclass 400).

 

ELECTRONIC TRAVEL AUTHORITY (SUBCLASS 601)

This visa is for people who were previously eligible for a Electronic Travel Authority (visitor) (subclass 976), Electronic Travel Authority (business – short validity) (subclass 977) or a Electronic Travel Authority (business – long validity) (subclass 956).

The Electronic Travel Authority lets you visit Australia for tourism or business purposes if you hold a passport from a certain country. Tourism includes holidays, recreation and seeing family and/or friends. Business purposes may include attending a conference, negotiation or an exploratory business visit. You cannot work for or provide services to a business or organisation in Australia or sell goods or services to the public. If you are intending to carry out short-term work in Australia you should apply for the new Temporary work (short stay activity) visa (subclass 400).

 

eVISITOR (SUBCLASS 651)

This visa has not changed

eVisitor lets you visit Australia for tourism or business purposes if you hold a passport from a certain country. Tourism includes holidays, recreation and seeing family and/or friends. Business purposes may include attending a conference, negotiation or an exploratory business visit. You cannot work for or provide services to a business or organisation in Australia or sell goods or services to the public.  If you are intending to carry out short-term work in Australia you should apply for the new Temporary work (short stay activity) visa (subclass 400).
